Introducing, a Going Green Series
Thursday, September 3, 2009 at 5:23PM
I think I'm going to name it: Get Real Green - an intentional play on words that I find funny, or appropriate ... and hope at least one other person besides my mother does, as well.
Why Get Real Green? Because, well - being green doesn't have to be about epic undertakings, moving "off the grid" or discontinuing the use of all plastics. I'm not saying don't do those things, I'm just saying I'm not doing those things. A typical day in the life of this crafty green mom starts about 6am, where I drag myself out of bed, get some degree of ready for work, wake The Boy ... trip, climb and otherwise navigate whatever mess is presently strewn across the entire house (it's a small house) - which is usually my own making (presently it's craft books).
The Boy hates been woken up. So, I get to wrestle and pissed off three-year-old whilst trying to get out the door by 7 am. Sometimes I make it out by 7:15am, mostly I am on my way by 7:45 ish.
Drop The Boy at pre-school, work all day, pick The Boy up from pre-school take him home.
Depending on The Man's schedule, I may or may not be on my own in the evening - generally I am. So, it's all me to get the laundry done, pick up, get something to eat prepared, etc. I know - this is very much like what all of you do every day as well. So, what's my point? Being greener is very important to me. Being greener and spending less time with my child, or otherwise jack-hammering much more into my already full days is not a reasonable options.
Get Real Green is about fitting little (maybe big) changes that are better for The Planet, our health, our homes and often our budgets - into our already overflowing busy lives. Thus, the "Get Real" portion of the title. The changes have to be realistic, or quite frankly - I don't think we'll make them. If they happen to involve crafty funness, so much the better.
As I become more and more passionate about about going greener, and raising my son to be more conscious of the effects what we consume have on our planet on our bodies - I want it to be part of our lives. Something no different from looking both ways before we cross the road - we do it because it's safer, and it's so second nature we just do it without noticing.
The "Real Green" part is probably self-evident.
The first installment in Get Real Green will be on the benefits (if they are truly there) of using organic products. What does it mean for products to be organic? And, why it matters. Stay tuned. Meanwhile,
